Summary: Unintended consequences are those nasty unpredicted side effects of an action thought to achieve its goals in a simple and straightforward manner. But many consequences, though unidentifiable, are highly likely to happen. Anticipating unlikely positive consequences can lead to increasing their likelihood and enhancing their benefits. Anticipating likely negative consequences can minimize damage. Anticipating consequences generally consists of brainstorming followed by monitoring, a primitive approach. A more effective approach is the Implications Wheel, which elucidates specific important positive and negative consequences, the pathways leading to them, and their further effects. Consideration of long-term consequences is challenging but crucial.
