Elan at Work

Summary: Elan, a spirit of vigor or enthusiasm, can energize individuals and stimulate organizations. Elan is felt on a personal level, but individual thresholds and criteria lead to different degrees of feeling elan. The author's sense of elan derives from her courage in taking a stand, her connection through humor, and ability to touch others' lives. Elan can be contagious, given the right circumstances. For an organization, elan comes from and feeds collective strength, when energy flows and synergy grows. Individuals know their work and contributions are meaningful. Institutional elan is marked by energy, challenge, risk, trust, and partnership, and often leads to dramatic improvements and transformations. Elan may be the prize that emanates from instability and uncertainty.
