Minimizing Average Failure Detection Time

Summary: A method is developed for finding the optimum testing sequence for locating a failed component, or subsystem, in a series system. It is assumed that failure probabilities can be assigned on the basis of maintenance and/or other data. The method is developed and illustrated with a numerical example dealing with a three-component system for which failures are exponentially distributed.
