Reviews of Standards and Specifications: MIL-STD-883 and Related Documents

Summary: MIL-STD-883, entitled "Test Methods and Procedures for Microelectronics," provides the test methods and procedures for the products of a whole new industry. It constitutes a new approach in combining a systems-type specification like MIL-Q-9858A with a lot acceptance-type specification such as MIL-STD-105D and MIL-STD-414. MIL-STD-883, coupled with MIL-M-38510, unfortunately embraces the approach of MIL-S-19500, which awkwardly uses LTPD as a classification value, and through its procedures incorporates a gross statistical error. This review is directed primarily toward the quality assurance provisions of these related documents.
