Set-Up Assurance Through Time Series Analysis

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the statistical methods used to arrive at an objective acceptance or rejection of a process when data generated by the process exhibit a significant amount of cyclical variation. Coating weight control for reverse roll coating is used to illustrate an actual application of the model building approach to time series analysis. Real but coded production data are analyzed using regression analysis with appropriate trigonometric transforms. The statistical technique presented here not only identifies sources of cyclical variation but measure their relative contribution to overall process variation. Adequacy of the model will be discussed in light of its intended application. Several examples of real process improvement will be presented as empirical evidence that the proposed set-up assurance scheme leads to sound decisions.
