Monitoring Multinomial Processes

Summary: Suppose a process produces items each of which may be classified on the basis of quality into mutually exclusive categories. Two classes of procedures are proposed to monitor such processes. The first uses a Pearson x2 statistics; the second depends upon the multinomial distribution and is useful when only increases in all but one category are of interest. Some statistical properties of these procedures are given, as well as an example of their use.
