Embedding Mixture Experiments Inside Factorial Experiments

Summary: Factorial arrangements are among the most widely used experimental designs. Mixture experiments on the other hand are performed primarily in the chemical, material, and food development industries. To many people, factorial experiments and mixture experiments are quite different. Yet, in some applications of factorial experiments there may be included in the factorial arrangement one or more mixture designs. Recognizing this, it is possible to supplement the information obtained through a factorial analysis of the data with additional information acquired by a mixture analysis. These two types of information are very different in most experiments.
