Dorian Shainin's Variables Search Procedure: A Critical Assessment

Summary: In this paper we discuss Variables Search, one of Dorian Shainin's statistical tools for quality improvement. We are critical in our evaluation of Variables Search as an experimental design method for uncovering important factors. We find that there is little reason to abandon the traditional and well-studied fractional factorial designs in favor of the Variable Search design strategy.
