Mean Selection for Filling Processes Under Weights and Measures Requirements

The problem of optimally selecting the mean of a filling process for a number of model variations is examined. Issues considered which maximize expected profit include the costs of waste, overfill, and "top-up." Numerical and graphical solutions are applied to an industrial example, and the effects of process change on the optimal solution are discussed. Implications to weights and measures requirements are provided, with emphasis on loss in expected profits.
