Use of Welch-Satterthwaite Approximation in Calibration of Voltage Standards

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Equations that predict mean voltage and uncertainty in voltage are used in certifying banks of solid state voltage standards. Application of the Welch-Satterthwaite Approximation can greatly decrease the number of calibrations required to provide satisfactory levels of uncertainty for the bank average. The method is first contrasted with the standard approach in metrology for expressing uncertainty, then demonstrated in a case study involving a bank of four solid state voltage standards. An analysis technique is proposed that may be used to determine the advantages and potential limitations of the method when estimating measurement uncertainties.
