Improved Monitoring of Multivariate Process Variability

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]The standard method of determining the average of sample covariance matrices for multivariate process control charting results in a biased estimate of the control limits. A control chart with unbiased control limits is proposed that has a smaller average run length and is more sensitive to shifts in process variability. The advantages of the method are illustrated in an example from manufacturing.
