On Small Shifts in Quality Control

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]While the Shewhart X-bar chart is effective in detecting large shifts in a process, it allows shifts smaller than one standard deviation to remain undetected for long periods of time. Supplementing the Shewhart chart with a cumulative sum chart corrects this deficiency and results in more effective process monitoring.
