The Generally Weighted Moving Average Control Chart for Detecting Small Shifts in the Process Mean

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]The proposed generally weighted moving average (GWMA) control chart is based on the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart, but with time-varying control limits to detect startup shifts more sensitively, it is better at detecting small shifts of the process mean. A further enhancement proposed is a composite Shewhart-GWMA scheme that with or without runs rules is more sensitive than the GWMA alone. Average run lengths obtained by the GWMA control chart are investigated when the assumption of normality is violated.
