Alternatives to the Multivariate Control Chart for Process Dispersion

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Six new multivariate control chart designs for process dispersion are compared to the standard multivariate process dispersion control chart. The designs transform the standard control chart statistics for process dispersion into a standard scale allowing runs to be incorporated into the designs. The importance of an extension for using runs rules in a multivariate control chart is stressed since the use of runs rules is ordinarily limited to univariate control charts. The performances of the new designs and the standard control chart are based on the computed average run length profiles. Five of the new designs outperformed the standard control chart.
