Effect of Nonnormality on the Economic Design of Warning Limit X-Bar Charts

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] When designing control charts used to monitor manufacturing processes, it is assumed that the measurements are normally distributed, but this assumption may not apply in certain processes. The effect of nonnormality on the design of warning limit X-bar charts is examined by combining two existing models. It is shown that negative skewness leads to wider control and warning limits. It is also noted that larger kurtosis produces a longer significant run length and wider control and warning limits.
