Qualitative Ordinal Scales: The Concept of Ordinal Range

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] The solution of many quality control problems often involves the use of ordinal scales. Since the concept of distance between two generic levels of the same scale is not defined in this environment, traditional statistical distributions cannot be applied. A new statistical approach, ordinal distribution, is proposed to describe a population of judgments expressed on an ordinal scale. The main location and dispersion measures appropriate to an ordinal environment are discussed, and a new methodology to calculate their ordinal distribution is presented.
