Graded Approach to Application of Quality Assurance Controls at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant
Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]The Washington TRU Solutions LLC (WTS) reengineering initiative for the application of graded approach at the DOE Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is described. WIPP is non-reactor nuclear storage facility used for permanent disposal of transuranic (TRU) waste. New DOE guidance advocates the graded-approach concept to the application of quality assurance controls to the design and construction of systems, structures and components (SSCs) based on their importance to nuclear safety. A methodology adopted to assure safety in accordance with the guidelines expands the application of graded approach beyond SSCs to include activities such as procurement and procedures. The integration of the reengineered graded approach process with other site management systems forms the basis for WIPP Integrated Safety Management Systems.
