Toward Changing Performance Appraisal to Address TQM Concerns: The 360-Degree Feedback Pocess

Summary: Quality management practitioners have raised a number of objections to the performance appraisal process. Yet despite those shortcomings, traditional performance appraisal remains a cornerstone of American management practice. The purpose of this article is to discuss how the performance appraisal process can be significantly changed through the use of an expanded 360-degree system that is applied to both goal setting and performance appraisal. How the 360-degree process addresses a number of the major TQM concerns is described, as are some of the disadvantages of 360-degree appraisals. Several research issues that should be explored to improve the performance of 360-degree appraisals are also described.
