ISO 9000: What Is Its Impact on Performance?

ISO 9000 is becoming critical for companies in both the manufacturing and service sectors. Questions have been raised in a debate surrounding the effects of ISO 9000 on performance. Topics such as cost reduction, quality improvement, and time performance improvement can be examined via an analysis of data collected through a survey based on a sample of 100 Italian manufacturing firms. All of the firms received ISO 9000 certification between June 1993 and June 1995. Researchers found that the impact of certification is clearest is the areas of internal and external quality, punctuality, and throughput time. There are no significant performance effects on other time and cost performances.
