Cost of Software Quality: Justifying Software Process Improvement to Managers

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.] The cost of quality (CoQ) technique, developed to show managers the financial benefits of process improvements, has been widely used in manufacturing and service industries for decades. Only recently has it been applied to software development, and results indicate that software quality costs can be reduced dramatically through long-term process improvement programs. Application of the CoQ technique to software is discussed and illustrated with an application example.
