Rapid Assessment to Solicit Process Improvement in Small and Medium-Sized Organizations

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] While software process improvement (SPI) has attained widespread acceptance in medium to large organizations, many small businesses often lack knowledge of basic software best practices and SPI methods. A project funded by the European Commission has been created to perform rapid assessments to introduce such enterprises to SPI. Data collected through assessments show the rapid assessment method is an effective way to disseminate software best practices, as well as actual improvement methods. A sidebar article describes the SPICE process, a model that is the basis for the definition of the emerging ISO/IEC 15504 standard for software process assessment methodologies.
