The Uses and Abuses of Software Metrics

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]The use of metrics outside the usual boundaries of the goal/question/metric paradigm is explored. Failure to consider data types and limitations, or the misuse of data analysis results in incorrect decisions. Examples illustrate some of the abuses of software metrics and control charts used in software applications. Success enjoyed by the manufacturing sector has shown that statistical thinking can benefit software development. A sidebar article lists some useful and simple books.
