Summary: This book excerpt examines a fictional company's successful use of Design of experiments (DOE) testing. The story follows the experiences of the head of the quality department at HPZ Chemicals as he implements Six Sigma in a difficult environment. People who oppose the initiative, what is required to make Six Sigma work, and the many successes and failures encountered along the way add to the narrative. As the story begins, HPZ has started Black Belt training and is in the "improve" phase of its first project. A sidebar article provides a list of characters and the roles they play.
