Tukey's Paper After 40 Years, With Discussion

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]John W. Tukey published his paper, The Future of Data Analysis, in 1962. Since then many authors have discussed it, including Peter Huber, who reviewed the period beginning with Hotelling's 1940 article, The Teaching of Statistics. The author extends Huber's comments by reviewing the period before 1940 and developments since 1995. The question is posed asking if statistics is a science. In order to attract bright students to the field, the author adds, they must be shown the rewards and excitement of applied work.
