Quality Takes an Artistic Detour

Summary: Can an artistic approach improve communication in monthly corporate meetings? Responding to a plea from the CEO for some way to increase attendance at the meetings, the author suggested moving from the highly structure, and dull, presentations in the auditorium to the more intimate surroundings of the company cafeteria, complete with food, wine, and a graphic artist to help outline the corporate vision. The idea was met with skepticism by management, but eventually he was given his chance to demonstrate his plan. The meeting was a great success, and although there seemed to be no corporate memory of his business contribution, the author says the artist in him has helped him understand that this is how meaningful change is supposed to happen. He continues to use his creative gifts in an increasingly receptive corporate environment.
