Comparing Curves Using Additive Models

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Advances in technology make available thousands of measurements in industrial processes that enable reconstruction of the entire profile of the operation over time and space. The complicated forms of many of these signatures do not fit parametric models well. Additive models can assess the sources of variation active on these signatures because they contain a nonparametric portion to model the form and a parametric portion to incorporate other sources of variation. Techniques are illustrated using density profiles of engineered wood boards. Guidelines on implementation of techniques in S-Plus and SAS are provided.
