Operating Window Experiments: A Novel Approach to Quality Improvement

The operating window method has been used in a number of industrial settings, but is a novel tool in quality engineering. A system's quality and reliability can be improved if a critical factor for competing failure modes can be identified, thus reducing the probability of failures by widening the operating window of this factor. A firm basis is given for some existing practice, such as the operating window signal-to-noise ratio, and an improved strategy is provided for design, analysis, and system optimization. A wave soldering experiment is used to demonstrate the new approach.
