Split-Plot Fractional Designs: Is Minimum Aberration Enough?

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]The literature on designing split-plot experiments focuses on minimum aberration as the design criterion, but minimum aberration has been criticized as a design criterion for completely randomized fractional factorial design and alternative criteria, such as two-factor interactions, have been suggested. However, standard split-plot designs exhibit several types of two-factor interactions, and minimum aberration is not designed to distinguish among them. This is also valid for any other design criteria proposed for completely randomized designs. Therefore, it is proposed that a modified version of the maximum number of clear two-factor interactions design criterion be used for split-plot designs.
