Empirically Testing Some Important Factors for Expert Systems Quality

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]As organizations become more dependent on expert systems (ES), the quality of those systems becomes increasingly important. A study based on information collected from 67 projects in IBM's Corporate Manufacturing Expert Systems Project Center identified six major variables to be tested. For study purposes, the components of each of the variables were correlated with the components of ES quality. Based on study results, several recommendations are given to help ES project managers enhance project quality, including increased ES developer training, the use of a systems approach to solving business problems, and ensuring a proper match of ES tools and the business problems at hand.
