Summary:
A Six Sigma team can use various statistical tools to establish a correlation between variables of interest, but correlation does not imply causation. Causation can be established by actively manipulating the variable and quantifying the effects. These features are contained in design of experiments (DOE), providing a powerful statistical tool that can be effectively applied in each of the four phases of a Six Sigma project. Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) integrates DOE and Six Sigma from the outset for developing new products and implementing new systems. The use of DOE in Six Sigma projects not only increases chances of success, but provides process understanding that pays dividends far into the future.
