Software has long been one of the most difficult challenges faced by many businesses. High rates of failure, rework and cost of poor quality (CoPQ) consume a large share of software resources. Six Sigma has gained widespread acceptance in many industries as a beneficial approach to product and process improvement. As application spreads to software development, one must consider how Six Sigma can be integrated with other improvement initiatives and models. Developing and communicating a clear statement of the connections between various initiatives has been found to be a critical factor for successful deployment of any set of improvements. Progressive organizations think of Six Sigma as an umbrella under which are a large set of quality tools and ideas that professional can draw upon to do their work. A case study shows how one information storage company has defined the connections between several initiatives.
