An Ethical Theory for the Advancement of Professionalism in Software Engineering

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]Situations often occur that challenge a software professional's application of the principles set out in the ASQ Code of Ethics. Professional behavior and careful consideration of choices when the ethical course of action is unclear are vitally important. The definition of professionalism is explored and an ethical theory is propose and tested in commonly occurring software development scenarios to help determine the best course of action. The ethical theory can be used to bolster professionalism while ensuring that tactical objectives of software quality management are being met.
