How To Test Usability of Security Sensitive Systems

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]Security testing to identify the vulnerabilities of software is of great concern to the software industry, but little attention has been given to its usability. A framework is proposed for testing the usability of security sensitive systems that defines general usability attributes and requires their experimental evaluation. The framework is used to test the usability of alternative realizations of a widespread PKI-based system that differ for the personal security devices used. Test results show that usability issues lead to security problems. Recommendations are made for addressing usability in security software based on security devices.
