Process Capability Analysis for Processes With Either a Circular or a Spherical Tolerance Zone

Summary: A procedure to perform capability analysis for processes which must adhere to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing methods is developed. It takes into account the tolerance zone and the process variability. Assuming that the deviation from target for each coordinate is normally distributed and that the deviations are independent and identically distributed, a density function and the corresponding cumulative distribution function for the distance from target in both two- and three-dimensional space are presented. The values for nonconforming parts per billion produced by the process are presented graphically and in tabular form as a function of the variance of the coordinate deviation and of the process specification. An application to ballistics is also included.
