A Synthesis of Quality Function Deployment and Robust Design and Its Application in the Medical Device Industry

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]

First, unique design requirements and quality characteristics for the medical device industry are presented. Then, a framework is provided for synthesizing quality function deployment and robust design. Finally, the integrative methodological framework is applied to a case study in the development of a particle counter. Utilizing quality function deployment and robust design in the development process will yield a product that is: effective as mandated by law; highly competitive; developed quickly; low in unit manufacturing cost; and low in lifetime maintenance costs.
