Defining Characteristics for Product Development Using Quality Function Deployment: A Case Study on Indian Bikes

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] The success of a company depends on understanding customer preferences and anticipating changes needed in new and existing products. A heuristic approach to the problem of product development discussed here uses a combination of analytical hierarchy process with quality function deployment to evaluate the design of bikes most appealing to customers. The proposed model identifies the disproportionate allocation of the engineering characteristics and need for restructuring. The approach is demonstrated in a case study of the selection of a bike.
