Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] The threats of global epidemics and bioterrorism have created a demand for research in healthcare and disease surveillance. An overview and review is given of existing data collection and surveillance systems, as well as popular methods and performance measures currently in use. Also discussed are specific challenges and future research in temporal and spatiotemporal surveillance.
