Design and Optimization Aids for Composite Control Charts

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Composite control charts whereby several control charts are used concurrently to monitor the same data offer a powerful method to quickly detect changes in a wide domain of disturbance sizes. However, little optimization has been attempted on composite control chart design to maximize this power. Software has now been developed to enable solving of multivariable in-control specifications. A free beta computer program is demonstrated that can design composite control charts based on moving average, exponentially moving average, and cumulative sum control charts. The software package and algorithms are described and used to design a four-component composite cumulative sum control chart.
