Empirical Procedure for Modeling the Variation Transmission in a Manufacturing Process

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] A method is described that uses regression analysis to select models that relate quality characteristics to process variables and techniques to estimate variance from the observed data. The method can be used where the process is not under control and where all process variables cannot be measured directly. Although tests confirm the method’s suitability in the manufacture of ceramic tile, additional research is needed to determine its usefulness for guiding process improvement.
