Statistical Thinking and Methods in Quality Improvement: A Look to the Future

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] The future of statistics in business and industry has been widely discussed in the literature recently. This article narrows the focus to the future of statistics as it applies specifically to quality improvement. The authors contend that the field of statistics has not accepted or adequately dealt with changes in the environment over recent decades. It is suggested that the field needs to function more as an engineering discipline than as a pure science. Suggestions are made as to how the profession can make necessary changes to ensure its future in quality improvement.
