Six Triumphs and Six Tragedies of Six Sigma

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Six Sigma and its derivatives have enjoyed an unprecedented period of popularity. A number of aspects of Six Sigma can be considered triumphs, including its use of a common, realistic for quality assessment and its recognition of time effects. Some trends, such as the belief that Six Sigma is always applicable and the idea that statisticians are irrelevant, can be considered tragedies. Six Sigma is a useful tool for quality improvement, but practitioners should be careful to minimize the tragedies and maximize the triumphs.
