Case Study: An Application of Logistic Regression in a Six Sigma Project in Health Care

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] An improvement project was undertaken to improve participation in a rehabilitation program by patients of the Virga Jesse Hospital's cardiology department. The probability that a patient joins the program is modeled as a function of a variety of factors based on a data set of 516 patients. An exploratory analysis of the data is followed by a formal logistic regression analysis. The logistic regression shows that the major influence factors are the distance from the patient's home to the hospital and whether or not the patient has a car. This analysis led to several measures to stimulate carpooling.
