System Health Assessment

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] Many complex systems are required to both be in a continuous state of operational readiness and have minimal life cycle cost. Prognostics and health management (PHM), in which system health assessment is used to optimize maintenance scheduling and parts stocking and to forecast the lifespan of the system, is emerging as a way to meet these conflicting needs. Key to PHM are a definition of system health and a strategy for measuring it through a system health assessment (SHA). This article describes system health, demonstrates its application through examples, and explains how an SHA can facilitate PHM.
