Open challenges: Determination of root cause frequency

Summary: Understanding and reducing variation is key to improving product quality. Sometimes, the pursuit of understanding the variation of a process is challenging as the underlying root causes may not be easily identified nor understood. Even after identifying a root cause, additional work may be needed to determine how to eliminate the root cause and its negative effects. Companies often must weigh the potential benefits associated with removing the root cause with the cost to address it. We describe here a real situation where the trade-off between cost and benefits is not straightforward.
