Conflict Leadership: Navigating Toward Effective and Efficient Team Outcomes

Summary: The author posits that conflict management is the driving force behind team decision making, behavior and outcomes. Conflict within a team is normal, and awareness of one's personal position in the evolution of conflict can help control the direction in which the conflict evolves. One particularly common source of conflict is the clashing of different managerial styles. One critical phase for overcoming conflicts is the mapping out of processes. The author's coalesced authority, power, and influence (CAPI) model can help by shedding light on areas of conflict and opportunities for aligning authority, power and influence. To maximize process efficiency, this can be combined with the Revised Decision-Square model (RDSM) to categorize the various necessary decisions and assist in the efficient followup and control of issues. Intertwining team leadership and conflict management can redirect conflict energy toward creative, goal oriented decision making.
