Is the Workplace a Zombie Breeding Ground?

Summary: Some employees can become metaphorical zombies in the workplace, but the workplace is often not to blame, despite what many may think. Individual employees have a choice to allow themselves to become zombies or to become more enlightened and positive. Employers can foster positive and engaged employees by seeing employees as whole individuals, delegating projects that cater to employees interests, encouraging reflection time, and discussion of mindsets and attitudes as well as skill sets. On the other hand, employers can create more zombies and dampen employee growth by separating outside life and work life, allowing zombies to train new hires, keeping a narrow focus on the mission of the organization, and thinking of employees as assets rather than whole individuals. However, despite the work environment employees find themselves in, it is the responsibility of the individual to overcome a zombie state of being and seek engagement and positivity.
