Summary: The vast majority of lean manufacturing programs undertaken are abandoned within a year, and very few of the projects that are completed meet the expectations and goals of an organization. Resistance to change is difficult to overcome, especially without the support of strong leaders. Data taken from 20 interviews of leaders shows that leadership, communication and trust is essential to a successful lean manufacturing initiative. Good leadership must know how to get employees on board for improvement initiatives both in the short and long term.
