Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors’ abstract.] Most large software projects are late, over budget, or terminated, often because of large numbers of defects not detected until testing. Large software projects that succeed without delays or budget overflows always have superior defect prevention and removal, including pre-test removal. State-of-the-art software quality is likely the single most important goal in software process improvement.
