Application of Quality Tools to Data Warehousing Projects

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] This article aims to address the issues encountered in data warehousing projects and the use of quality tools to define, analyze, and solve the critical issues to improve data quality, reduce escalations, improve customer satisfaction, and reduce costs. On implementation of the proposed solutions, which were recommended after analysis using the quality tools, there was a 70 percent reduction in failures and a 60 percent reduction in extract, transform, and load (ETL) run time. This resulted in an improvement in the data warehouse quality, decreased the risk of not meeting production deadlines, saved much of effort and time (approximately one person-month), and finally resulted in increased business user satisfaction.
