A Statistical View of the Transient Signals That Support a Wireless Call

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors’ abstract.] During a wireless call, the signaling between the network and mobile needed to manage the call generates a great deal of signal strength data, some of which is seen only by the mobile placing the call and some of which is seen only by the network. Some of the complexities of the signal strength data are described, and a statistical model of the signals from the network to the wireless device is provided. The model takes into account the time-dependent, spatial, and multivariate nature of the call. In addition, an approach to estimating the model parameters online as network data are collected is described and applied to a set of call data.
